DENTAL SOAP RECIPE TOOTH SOAP
I recently read a forum post about dental soap and it sounded interesting, so I did some research. It seems dental soap is nothing new, it has been around since the 1800's. But how many of you have used it, or even heard of it?
With all the toxic chemicals in commercial toothpaste, its a great idea to make your own. Use food grade lye and pure essential oils.
Peppermint Dental Soap
Here is one recipe I found for cold process dental soap (I have not tried it yet because I do not have any Almond oil, see my recipe below):
Cold Process Soap Oral Care Recipe
Use CP Oven method
10 oz Almond Oil
10 oz Coconut Oil (extra virgin is nice it has a bit of natural sweetness)
3 oz Lye
6.6 oz Water
Essential oils of choice (I used peppermint and clove, about 25-30 drops added at trace)
Process soap as normal (for experienced soap makers only). I CP-OP my soap for a faster cure time. Play around with the recipe and size. Always run any recipe through a lye calculator.
This soap can be used as-is for those going for extreme frugality and simplicity. Yes it is soap. Yes, it tastes like soap. But it is surprisingly mild tasting. I wasn’t frothing at the mouth like a rabid dog or gagging. Two key points are to brush your tongue before applying soap to your brush and to rinse very well afterward. Rinsing is key to oral hygiene anyway.
Two or three swipes across the soap bar with your moistened brush are sufficient.

Some make dental soap with 90% olive oil and 10% cocoa butter and say it does not taste bad.
Fragrance free salt bars also make great dental soap. I had some that were made with Hibiscus tea and topped with Pink Himilian salt that worked great. I just sawed one in half with a hacksaw to try it out. They did not really taste like soap, just salty. I quickly got used to the taste and my teeth felt super clean.
After trying the salt bars, I brewed up my own dental soap recipe using Peppermint essential oil. I found some cool rounded ice cube trays to use as a mold. They actually look like big teeth:) They do not need to be very big bars since it only takes a few swipes with a wet toothbrush and will last a long time.

Information on Essential Oils
Use pure uncut food grade essential oils for flavor and scent, as well as antimicrobial properties. Peppermint oil is often used, and it has antimicrobial action. Spearmint, Tea tree, Lemon balm and Eucalyptus essential oils also are antimicrobial, and so are other members of the mint family.
