Save money and stay healthy by making your own hand sanitizer. Commercial hand sanitizers are loaded with chemicals that are absorbed into the skin. I have read about children taken to the emergency room with alcohol poisoning from drinking the stuff.
My favorite recipe contains no alcohol and natural antibacterial essential oils. I would still keep it out of reach of small children. Essential oils, especially Tea Tree should not be used if you are pregnant or nursing. What can you do? I guess, wash your hands a lot so you do not need sanitizer:)
Basic Natural Hand Sanitizer Recipe
In a dark colored 4 ounce bottle, add
- 1 Tablespoon Witch Hazel
- 1 teaspoon Aloe Vera Gel
- 5 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil
- 20 drops Lavender, Cinnamon, Lemon, Eucalyptus, or Clove essential oil-or 5 drops of the oils you have to your liking
A spray bottle is handy if you have one. If not, just use any clean dark bottle.
Another idea: Use 4 Thieves essential oil instead of oils listed.
You can find most of the ingredients at a health food store or pharmacy and the rest online.
