How would you like to raise your own food with no bending, no irrigation the second year, very little weeding, and no upkeep?
If you happen to have rotting trees from a storm, tree branches, or know someone who has some land with old fallen trees, you are ready to go. We just happen to have a long row of trees at the edge of our property where I threw them to build a natural divider line. Perfect!
I just read an article about hugelkultur. It is a German word for building raised garden beds from rotting trees and branches. How's that for a recycling idea? No need to pay someone to haul them away after a storm. All you do is stack the trees in long rows and cover with sod and soil. Paul shows many cool ways to build them with stones or logs around them to keep in place or to look more acceptable to nosy neighbors.

I will be out checking my tree branches tomorrow to see if they will work for a new garden this spring!
